Still a Spark of Life in the Nanuet Mall

I happened to walk through the upper level of the mall last week. There were so few stores that I thought this recession would be the final whisper that would send it crashing into oblivion.

But today, I walked through the bottom part and saw some life. Macy’s in particular was actually crowded. I saw fewer people as I walked over to Sears, but there are a lot more stores on the bottom level than the top.

Of course, the numbers of people were nothing like the place had in its heyday. But Sears was busy, too, and they were working the PA system aggressively, with red-light specials and Big Bargains! Now! to move people around the store.

You still have to wonder what’s keeping the place alive, other than Macy’s and Sears. Parking is no problem at all these days, and with Christmas around the corner.

Fia said recently that she had heard that someone was going to renovate the place again and bring in more stores, make it an “outlet center,” whatever that means (all Marshall’s and Peddlers Marts?)

You still have to wonder. How long was it the retail center of the county? I guess from its opening in 1971 until the Palisades center opened, what, 15 years ago? And it has been on life support since. So maybe 20 years?

We do live in rapidly changing times...

15 years ago seems a bit long... I think I was older than five when the Palisades opened...

Yeah, I think it was ten years ago, because it opened just before I was old enough to legally work there.

I bow to the memories of those with a better perspective on this. Time tends to muddle when you have been an adult for so many years.
